Availability of Apartments

Hello,

I have heard mixed advice as to when to commit to an apartment. Some tell me that availability is very limited and I should find an apartment now before I start in September and wire transfer my deposit to someone. However, others say that there are plenty of apartments and I should wait until I get there to see everything in person and meet the realtor in person who will receive my deposit.

Can anyone comment on this? Should I deposit now, without seeing the apartment, or wait until I get to the island?
