So you are planning to apply for the university of Debrecen medical school? How about you start reading here first before making any decisions?
So I have been attending this University for almost 3 years now, and to be honest with you, it sucks! This University is business based - earning money by FAILING students. Their aim is to earn money from us. not to "produce" medical doctors.
This University might be regarded as one of the ''best'' universities in Europe, but then that means all the other universities must be crap.
Do you know what we call Debrecen? Depression! Maybe we should call it "The business university of depression"
As you already know the university has several faculties, most people try to get into the Dentistry and Medicine faculties. Let me tell you something. There is BARELY any difference between the two faculties as the university fail to separate the two. Sadly the dentistry students study almost every single subject ( now im talking about first, second and third years, which are the HARDEST ) PLUS their own dentistry subjects. Why?! Since when do dentistry students need to study the anatomy of the pelvis ? or Upper and Lower? Right, they need some general information, but hell no! They have to study the subject so deeply, and even oral/practical exam must be done as well! Thats stupid! What about Neurobiology? Again, its important as general information but not freakin every single detail, from the tracts to all the nuclei in the brain. thats so unnecessary ! Oh lets stop talking about the subjects, how about the professors? Wow, i have nothing (not) to say about them. Some of them are so racist, they have no respect towards the students, they treat them like dogs.
Once i was in one of the departments, third floor waiting for my friend to get her results for one of the subjects, and of course there were a lot of students including hungarians. We were a bit loud, as everyone was talking. Suddenly a professor comes out of one of the rooms, talks with the hungarians in a very nice calm voice, probably telling them to be quiet. Then he turns towards us, and he shouts at the top of his lungs, with all his might "SHUT UP! IM HAVING AN EXAM IN THE ROOM AND I CANT HEAR ANYTHING!''
PFFF... please, i understand that he was having an exam with one of the students, but HOW ON EARTH ARE WE SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT? And couldn't he have said it in a nicer way? We are not kids, some of the students are very old. What does he regard us as? And why the discrimination? Debrecen is living off of the international students. Its developing from all our money. show some respect!
How about this time when my friend was asked to remove her head scarf because he thought she was cheating in an oral exam?!
Or when another friend of mine was having a practice class, and the teachers were sitting and making jokes at the students in hungarian? We know this because one of the students knows hungarian and he could understand everything. How unprofessional!
Once we were having an oral exam. The teacher came down to call out names. He was in the room next door, so the poor girl didn't hear her name. She hadn't slept for two days studying her backside off. She was probabily on planet venus. So After an hour or so he came down again and started calling out names. he called her name out again and put an absence mark. She then responded and said she was there. He got angry and said, "why didn't you tell me you were here, were you even here?"(claiming that she was late for the exam, um no, sorry who dares to come late) She then told him that she hadn't slept at all, and that she was sorry. he responded by saying "Well i havent slept EITHER!"
SORRY, but the reason why you didnt sleep has nothing to do with us. We had NO choice but to stay up and study, because your exams are so freakin messed up. Whatever you study, how much you study, you still feel like you havent studied anything! Why couldn't he sleep? Its obviously a joke to him. He comes into the exam, does the oral, then goes home. Why didn't he sleep? its not like he had to prepare for the exam? And if he really didn't sleep, then he was probably enjoying his life, not going through hell. How about he just looks over it. She didn't hear her name, so what? the exam was not over yet. He still had a few students left. Stop making such a big deal out of small things.
What about the subjects then? Well, most of the exams here are oral, once you get into second year that is. You will have a few oral exams in first year. Very stressful. And lets be honest, oral exams depend greatly on your luck, which teacher you get and the topic you pick up. Oh and maybe a little bit of how much you have studied. But sometimes, even if you study a lot, and you get a very bad, strict teacher, all your hard work, sleepless nights will be lost. Like nothing.
some other subjects like biophysics are so pointless but hard to pass. It has two parts, minimals, which is A part and Essay+ Multiple choice+RelationAnalysis B part. In the final you have to pass first A part ( You have to memorise 300 minimals by heart) and then they will start marking your B part. You might have scored a very high mark but failed your A part = Failing the subject. Of course you have 3 chances, but don't think it's easy.
Another miserable subject is Anatomy. It's not just human anatomy, but has histology 1 and 2, embryology and anatomy upper limb, lower limb and skull. All in one subject. You fail one of them in your last chance you fail the whole subject, even if you passed all the other parts. Tough. It sucks. I know people who ended up repeating a whole year because they only failed one of the histology parts. They had passed all their other subjects, like cell biology, molecular biology, etc. And the stuff that you learn, after a year, you forget.
Every year. They fail people, because they want money. This university accepts students over the limit, therefore they have to get rid of them somehow. They dont have enough places for 200 students in the dental faculty in 5th year. Noway. So every year they have to filter them out. And that happens mostly in first and second year. Imagine the university being a sieve. And when you fail, you have to pay more fees the following year. ridiculous. Every year they make it harder for the students. Their rules change all the time. You are never ready. The more people apply, the harder they make it for students. And the more the teachers look down on you.
Trust me, till this day, i regret coming to this university. The things i mentioned above are only a few of what happens everyday at this joke of a university. If i could go back i would have NEVER even thought about applying. Never. But since I have already started i have to see it through I went through a period of depression, almost lost hope and gave up everyday. Basically i had no life. Studying 24/7. To survive in this Uni, you have to give up a few things, one - Your life. Lol
A few people i know have switched universities because they simply could not stand it here. I dont blame them.
Oh i forgot to mention the Hungarians? Half of them dont know english. including the youth. In shops, banks, maybe just in restaurants, and still not all. I can understand the old people not being able to speak it, but the youth? Now if you have been living in debrecen for a few years then you should be able to speak a little, but in your first year, it's a disaster. Sigh
In conclusion, This University is War between the students and the teachers. And them earning money from your parents. Who might be struggling to pay for you.
So if your planning on coming here, think twice, hell think as much as you want to. If you are not prepared to come, dont. Its my advice to you. I wish someone had given me this advice before i came.
