No Interviews? No Match in 2014? A program that takes you closer for the 2015 match
UMPIRE (University of Miami program to improve research and education) is a program launched in associationwith the Dr. Nirmala Swami Charitable Trust is aimed to prepare foreign medical graduates for residency in the United States.
The program is anchored in developing and conducting a publishable research projects. During the program trainees will also be part of clinical team, practice patient interview skills and be part of problem and simulation based learning.
MISSION STATEMENT
UMPIRE aims to provide a pre-residency United States academic experience to foreign medical
graduates exposing them to clinical research, patient safety, clinical rotations, and simulation based learning. As a result of these efforts we expect to improve the profile of the foreign graduates before residency.
DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES
Research:
During the research experience trainees will take our signature month long
research methods course and identify an area of research for the future months. The month focuses on epidemiological and biostatistical training,
identifying a mentor, developing a research idea and completing regulatory requirements (rsap.med.miami.edu)
Patient safety course:
Is an innovative curriculum to assure competencies in preventing medical errors. In the course we specifically address 1) calling for help; 2) teamwork and communication; 3) hand hygiene compliance; and, 4) preventing medication and other system errors.
(Center for Patient Safety at Miller School of Medicine)
Clinical rotations:
Will be done under the Global observership program and trainees will be able to become part of a medical team in one of our hospitals. (http://imi.med.miami.edu/education-a...ership-program)
Simulation based learning:
Trainees will be able to take advantage of the multiple simulation courses at the Gordon center for medical education. Specifically, trainees will have simulated patient interviews recorded for feedback, advanced life support and cardiovascular simulation courses
The next batch of students begins on June 15 2014 and admissions are now open. This is a very intensive 6 month program that prepares you for a residency match.
