Just an update on one of the work options for EU medical diploma holders:
As of last year (and the year before that), non-EU/UK citizens were generally unable to get hired in the UK, despite their EU credentials being readily accepted by the GMC. The UK immigration and work permit issues made it extremely difficult, indeed.
Well, this year things appear to have changed, at least somewhat. I have some US-citizen friends in their final year of medical school who are being recruited for training positions in some parts of the UK, based on their completion of an EU medical degree and their English fluency. When a location really-really needs doctors, suddenly that US citizenship thing apparently becomes less of a hurdle! Granted, these positions are not located in London, but they are UK jobs... which is a damn sight more promising than the UK options that were available when I graduated almost a year and a half ago. Word has it that there may even be long-term work visas available for any candidates who are hired (i.e., longer than the amount of time required to naturalize as a UK citizen... so pretty long-term).
So... there you have it. Stuff changes.
