I've been lurking here for a while, finally time to post. I'm probably gonna apply to the Windsor premed program for September. I've got about 60 college credits from a state university in the US, but I've been out of school for a few years. My gpa is horrible, I'm 24, and I'm starting to feel like I'm too old for where I'm at in life. I want to go to the island and kick ***--or kiss ***, whatever works--to get on track to having a career. Yes, my punk rock IDGAF high school self is glaring at me angrily for those words.
But I digress. I have a couple questions for you good people, especially those who have graduated or are on to clinicals for #2.
1. When applying to the program, is Windsor gonna be annoying and say "hey BWmF, where are your letters of rec and/or why are they from 2008" or "is this a smudge on your college transcript or does your cumulative gpa really start with a 1?" I guess my question is, do people get turned away from the premed program and will I be one of those sad few?
2. Since I only have 60 college credits I thought I'd take some online courses to get that number up to 90+. I saw people recommending some online program, forgot what it was called. But personally, I'd like to take math courses. U ILLINOIS has this online math program (netmath.illinois.edu). What do you all think about taking a course per semester while also taking courses at Windsor? I figure during premed it shouldn't be that bad, but is it possible to do so during basic sciences and also do well on Step 1? How about during clinicals?
3. Should I just go to Pakistan? I mean, it's 5 years either way, but I get laughed at when I speak Urdu. Also, rotations in the US are a big draw for the Caribbean, but is one group more competitive than the other for residency spots (specifically psychiatry, which is my interest right now).
Oh god this is a long post, I'm so sorry. Let's end this on an upbeat note.
4. What do you all do for fun? I mean, is there really this dichotomy that I seem to see here on the message board, where the students who do well study day and night, and everyone else wastes their time and money and fails and dies unfulfilled. Obviously I want to be in the first group, I'm too old and I've had enough fun for a while. But still, you guys aren't robots right? You're living in the freaking caribbean! Is there scuba diving, surfing, hiking, biking, anything going on?
Alright, I've subjected you all to more than enough. Apologies for excessive length and any typos, I'm on mobile. Thanks for reading all this, if you did, and thanks in advance for any responses.
