Reading through ValueMD for the first time I am shocked to see Avalon has not been called out. They are so unprofessional. I would like to explain what I went through with Avalon to protect future students from experiencing the same disappointment, lies, and loss of over $2000 dollars.
So I applied to Avalon mid summer. Once I applied I got an email from the admissions officer who guided me to the interview. I had to go through two interviews. One was conducted my Dr. Bala, the dean of basic sciences as it said on the website. My second interview was done by Dr. Samir. Of course I searched the website to learn about who was conducting my interview and guess what.... HE WAS THE PRESIDENT! Not only is he conducting interviews but he dodges students when they call for important matters "he is the president, you will not be able to speak with him" yetttttt he is conducting interviews. weird. So then he told me I was accepted into his piece of pooh pooh university.
The next day I got a call from the admissions department and spoke to the biggest liar in the world, Michelle Richards. She talked about how great the university was, how great the professors and the island is and how I would fit right in. She is a liar, she tells you what you want to hear so you pay the seat deposit. I hope she gets what she deserves one day for lying to students and making them pay to attend a pooh poohty university.
As a typical American, I was excited to arrive to the caribbean and see the beautiful campus that is plastered all over their website and face book. I was surprised to see the campus looked like an old abandoned building. The classrooms were completely empty (jail feel), no real working computers, no lounge or study area for the students. It is a disgrace. Not at all what a medical university should be. So, at the request of my parents I decided to put that all to the side and give it a chance.
The first day of classes was a nightmare. My class was about 90% Indian Students. I had no one in class to relate to or even speak too. The class smelled disgusting. The professors barely spoke english, as they are also from India and have just arrived. About 90% of the school is Indian. If you are an american or Canadian student I do not suggest attending this university. You will be a minority and have no friends. They are not friendly students and they make you feel as if you do not belong.
I am not racist and I do not mind being surrounded by culture. If I am paying over $5000 without loans or federal aid, I at least expect my professors to speak or understand english. Newly arriving from India, they obviously do not. It was just a complete joke.
Even the books I bought were published in India. They are not even real medical books.
They told me housing was within a 5 minute walk from campus........... it took me 32 minutes to walk to my first day in the hot weather

They do not assist students at all.
They say that the professors all speak english and have taken the USMLE- LIE
The USMLE Pass rate is 87% LIE no way can I believe that because of what I have not learned. I am teaching myself material.
I just lost thousands of dollars to attend a university that is a complete joke. They are not even accredited by CAAM and they have been in existence for almost 10 years. If they do not soon they are going down and i refuse to let them take me down with them.
I am transferring to CMU ASAP. They offer on campus housing, food, bus shuttles and at least their professors speak english.
I hope this posts can prevent other students from getting scammed and played as I did. I believed the lies and hype and am honestly very disappointed. Please let this be a warning for students considering avalon.
