FYI: Recognized Medical School Directory

History: The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) originally listed medical schools from around the globe. They later delegated this task to the University of Copenhagen, Danmark. It was called the Avicenna Medical School directory. In addition, the International Medical Education Directory/FAIMER located in the USA maintained a database.

Now, the AVICENNA directory closed down and the World Federation for Medical Education and the IMED/FAIMER have united to provide a world directory of medical schools.

What does all this mean? Well, years ago it was said that if your medical school wasn't "WHO listed", then it wouldn't be recognized globally. Now, the singular list is controlled by two collaborative organizations the WFME and FAIMER.

I find it interesting because the W.H.O. had different requirements than IMED for listing medical schools. In other words, one school may have previously got an IMED listing but not a WHO listing or vice versa. Now the school is either listed or it isn't! I wonder if this could be problematic especially, if there are medical schools operated by sovereign nations that have no desire to list their schools because they don't want to lose their talent to other countries?
